Can Hypnotherapy with Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) help me?

They can help with a wide variety of emotional, behavioural and physical issues which are often experienced in combination and made worse by worry and anxiety.

Will I be under your control? (most people ask this)

 You cannot be hypnotised against your will. You must want to be hypnotised in order to go into this relaxed state. You will never do anything while in hypnosis that goes against your moral code. My positive intention is to understand how you want your life to be different and to facilitate this process so you will reach your goals

I cannot make you do anything you do not want to do. Many people believe that hypnotherapy is something that is ‘done’ to them, that they explain their issue to the therapist who then simply hypnotises their problem away, as if by magic.

Although change can sometimes be rapid and seem like magic, solution focused hypnotherapy with NLP is a collaborative process and it is important to understand that change happens when you want it to and because you are prepared to take the necessary steps to allow it to happen.

Will I have to reveal secrets or say embarrassing things?

You do not have to say anything while in your hypnotic trance.  For some techniques I will ask you to indicate with your hand when you have visualised something.

Will I remember repressed and traumatic memories?

My sessions are generally future focused.  I will only ask you to recall an event for hypnosis to address a phobia or traumatic event.  The event will be agreed before hypnosis and if the original event is too upsetting we will work with a recent trigger event that you have chosen.

Will you just trick my mind into doing a new behaviour?

No, hypnosis does not trick your mind into thinking differently. You are completely in control and will never do anything that goes against your beliefs. You can reject a suggestion at any time.

Is there a difference between a stage hypnotist and a hypnotherapist?

YES! There is a very great difference between these two professions that share a similar title and use the same tool, but for very different reasons. Stage hypnotists use hypnosis for entertainment purposes only. Hypnotherapists use hypnosis and other techniques to help you understand and change sabotaging beliefs stored within your unconscious mind.

What if I cannot be hypnotised?

Nearly everyone can enter the hypnotic state. The depth of hypnosis is irrelevant to a successful outcome. The person with the highest motivation for change will achieve the most.

You may be surprised to know that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Anyone who is open and willing, who can hear me and who has no cognitive difficulties can go into hypnosis. It’s as simple as following my suggestion to take in a deep breath and on your exhale to think to yourself, relax……..

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

It is not possible to get stuck in hypnosis. People emerge naturally from hypnosis, particularly if there is a need to do so.

Is it safe?

Yes, hypnotherapy is safe in the hands of a qualified practitioner.

Are hypnotherapy and NLP suitable for children?

Hypnosis and NLP can be highly effective for the treatment of various children’s issues. Unlike adults, children are generally more receptive because they have vivid imaginations which makes it much easier to access the unconscious and bring about the desired change.

Depending on the child’s age and whether are ‘competent’ I may require a parent or carer to be present in sessions. We would discuss this during the initial consultation.  I also need consent from a parent or carer for all children under 18.

Are there any conditions which you would not treat?

Yes, I would not treat psychosis or certain types of personality disorder.

What happens during the initial consultation?

 The initial consultation is FREE of charge and is designed to assess what you want to achieve, how hypnotherapy with NLP can help you and to give an estimate of how many sessions you are likely to need. There will then be a discussion about how the brain works, why we behave as we do and what we can do about it. You will also get a FREE relaxation CD or download to help reinforce the process.

The initial consultation will last for approximately one hour.

What happens during the other sessions?

During the first part of each session we will talk about the progress you have made. I will be encouraging you to express yourself positively, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on problems.

We will return regularly to the discussion of how the mind works, why we behave as we do and how you can use your knowledge of the brain to makes positive changes.

Using solution focused therapy and NLP I will work alongside you to imagine your preferred future and work out how to make it real, looking forward to a time when the problem is no longer there. Focusing on solutions and learning new ways to think about situations can help enormously in reducing stress and anxiety levels.

The sessions allow you to do this without delving into painful past events or unpleasant memories.  This can bring an immediate sense of relief and help a person to feel calmer and more relaxed.

I will then guide you into a relaxed state of hypnosis so that you can consolidate what we have discussed.

This is the general framework for my sessions. I am happy to make adjustments for individuals, particularly children.

Can you guarantee success?

Success relies on commitment and motivation from both you and me to get the best results. Part of the work occurs in the consulting room and part of the work is your personal reflection and commitment to listen to the CD/download. As the customer, when you agree to undertake a course of sessions you also agree to engage with the process.

Success is dependent on you having a real desire to change.

What is CORP and why do you use it?

CORP is the Clifton Outcomes Research Programme. It is a research tool that allows me to record results at each session.  It is essentially a self-assessment tool for wellbeing and mentally healthy behaviours. It also adds to the growing body of evidence supporting solution focused hypnotherapy.  At each session I will ask you to indicate how you feel in 7 key life areas.
