Fears and Phobias
It is estimated that about 12% of the adult population experiences a phobic response at some point in their life and 3% suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). According to researchers at YouGov the top 5 phobias in the UK are:
- Heights (Acrophobia)
- Public speaking (Glossophobia)
- Snakes (Ophidiophobia)
- Flying (Aerophobia)
- Spiders (Arachnophobia)
Phobias can take over our lives. If you have one you will change the way you do things, or stop doing things you want to do. Maybe you would like to change that?
Symptoms of phobias range from knots in the stomach, sweaty palms, dry mouth, shaky legs and tightness in the throat. In extreme cases, sufferers experience nausea, panic attacks and excessive anxiety. People with a phobia will therefore go to great lengths to avoid speaking in public.
Most of these symptoms are due to the increase in adrenaline produced by our bodies because we are experiencing the flight-or-fight reaction. This primitive response still exists in us despite the fact that we no longer have to fight or run away from wild animals
For most single specific phobias I use the highly effective Rewind/ Reframe Technique. This removes the negative emotional content from the memory allowing the intellectual brain to reassess the fear and overwrite it with a new more beneficial response.
This technique is carried out in a safe way with no actual physical exposure to the stimulus. If specific fear memories are too painful then we can work with more recent ‘triggers’.
To remove most single specific phobias it usually takes 4 sessions in total (3 following Initial Consultation). Just imagine what you could be doing in 4 or 5 weeks without your fear!
Some people have several phobias or phobias which are part of another issue, for example OCD, PTSD or depression. These will usually require 10 – 14 sessions.
